Samantha Yang

Cello (Community Program Lead)

An avid chamber musician, 20-year-old cellist Samantha Yang performed in a wide range of ensembles throughout her development. Second Place winner at the 2024 Glenn Gould School Chamber Competition, Samantha’s piano trio, the Renati Trio, performed during the Canadian Opera Company’s Free Concert Series and was invited to close Les AMIS Concerts’ 2023-24 season. As a member of the Freude Quartet, Samantha was invited to the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition’s Youth Chamber Music Program, where she worked with Denis Brott, the Marmen Quartet, and the Viano Quartet. The quartet also had the opportunity to learn from Peter Oundjian. Alongside her chamber experience, Samantha’s solo achievements include winning the Emerging Artist Award at the Burlington Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Competition, securing First Place at the Ontario Music Festival Association Provincials, and debuting with the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra. She received mentorship from esteemed cellists including Colin Carr, Steven Doane, Zvi Plesser, Bryan Epperson, and Johannes Moser. Currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree at the Glenn Gould School, Samantha studies with Hans Jørgen Jensen and Andrés Díaz, and is a grateful recipient of full scholarship support from the JP Bickell Family Foundation. She plays on a nineteenth-century Thomas Kennedy cello, generously loaned to her by the Glenn Gould School.
