Viola (Community Program Mentor)

Violist Rebecca Benjamin, a native of Warsaw Indiana, has been recognized across the US as well as internationally for her versatility and expressive artistry. A prize winner of the 2025 Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition, Rebecca received the award for best performance of the commissioned work. She participated in the 2023 ARD and the 2022 Tokyo International Viola Competitions and has attended the Prussia Cove Masterclasses in Cornwall, England. Internationally, she has concertized in Australia, Canada, the Dominican Republic, England, Germany, and Switzerland.

An avid chamber musician, Rebecca is a member of the award-winning Abeo Quartet, having joined the ensemble in 2021. Prizewinners of the 2022 Yellow Springs and Chesapeake Chamber Music Competitions, they were also semifinalists in the 2023 Melbourne International String Quartet Competition as well as the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition. Abeo has performed across the country from the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC., to the La Jolla Music Society SummerFest. Currently, the quartet is based out of New York City. Rebecca has participated in festivals such as Music@Menlo, MISQA, Perlman Music Program,Aspen Music Festival, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival, Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar, Mimir Chamber Music Festival, and the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. She has worked and collaborated with members of the Alban Berg, Brentano, Cavani, Calidore, Cleveland, Concord, Emerson, Hagen, Juilliard, Orion, and Verona String Quartets, among many others.

Rebecca is on the faculty of the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival Maine Students Program and began teaching there in the summer of 2021. As a soloist, she has performed with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Youth Symphony, and the Music Institute of Chicago Academy Chamber Orchestra. She has recently performed with groups such as ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, the Kinetic Ensemble, Houston Bach Society, Canadian Chamber Orchestra, and Shepherd School Chamber Orchestras.

Rebecca graduated summa cum laude with her bachelors degree in Violin Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. She also holds a masters degree from CIM as well as a Master of Musical Arts degree from the Yale School of Music where she was awarded the Broadus Erle Prize in Violin. She earned an additional masters degree in Viola Performance from the University of Delaware while the Abeo Quartet was in residence as the Graduate Fellowship Quartet. Currently, Rebecca is pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Viola Performance from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University under the tutelage of James Dunham. She will assume the position of Principal Viola of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra (USA) in the fall of 2025.
