Chinese cellist Esther Jiahe Zhang is recognized as one of the most promising young talents of her generation. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Music at the Colburn Conservatory of Music under the tutelage of renowned cellist Clive Greensmith, where she previously attended the Colburn Music Academy.
Jiahe’s competitive success spans the globe, including top prizes at the 11th International Cello Competition in Serbia and the AiqinBei Cello Competition in Beijing. More recently, she won the 2024 SoCalPhil Young Artists Solo Competition and the Grand Prize at the 2025 Redlands Bowl Young Artists Concerto Competition, performing the Dvořák Cello Concerto under conductor Sameer Patel. An active soloist and chamber musician, Jiahe has performed Tchaikovsky’s Pezzo Capriccioso with the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra and appeared in recital at the Dvořák Museum in Prague. She has been a featured participant at prestigious festivals, including the SchleswigHolstein Musik Festival, Toronto Summer Music, and the Cello Akademie Rutesheim. Her collaborative spirit has led her to share the stage with distinguished artists such as Arto Noras and Tine Thing Helseth.
Professor Jo Cole of the Royal Academy of Music described her playing as “an engaging performance of great technical proficiency and spirit,” noting her “incisive articulation” and “soloistic confidence.” Jiahe has also benefited from masterclasses with legendary pedagogues, including Steven Isserlis, Miklós Perényi, and Frans Helmerson
