Introducing our Mainstage Artists: saxophonist & composer Alison Au!

"Allison Au (pronounced “ow”) is a JUNO Award-winning saxophonist, composer, and arranger. Highly regarded for her distinctive and imaginative voice, Allison has been lauded as “a new jazz ambassador” for Canada. Born to a Chinese father and Jewish mother, and raised in the multicultural metropolis of Toronto, Allison fell in love with music as a young child. Her father’s eclectic collection of vinyls and CDs exposed her to a wide array of musical styles. Struggling to find a sense of belonging in her biracial identity, the unhinged freedom of improvisation captivated Allison and quickly became her lab for self-expression and exploration. Au’s passion for composition led to the 2009 formation of the Allison Au Quartet featuring Todd Pentney (piano), Jon Maharaj (bass), and Fabio Ragnellli (drums). The ensemble has received continued critical acclaim. Au earned her first JUNO nomination for her debut album, The Sky Was Pale Blue, then Grey in 2013, and in 2016 seized the JUNO for “Best Jazz Album of The Year: Group” for Forest Grove. In 2019, she garnered another JUNO nomination for “Best Jazz Album of the Year: Group” for Wander Wonder."

Poppea Sabina, one of the most bewitching figures of Antiquity, aspires to rise to the rank of empress alongside her lover, the emperor Nero, who must repudiate his wife, Octavia, in order to do so. Power, desire, and ambition intertwine in this masterly work by Claudio Monteverdi, his last opera. Conducted by Leonardo García-Alarcón at the helm of Cappella Mediterranea, the concert version reveals the full dramatic power of this timeless opera. This production will tour Cologne, Geneva, Namur, Montreal, Toronto, and New York between May and July 2025. Join us for a champagne reception for the entire audience after the concert!

Welcome to the 2025 Toronto Summer Music Festival! This year, we have so much to celebrate. As we mark TSM’s 20th Anniversary from July 10 - August 2, we reflect on two decades of unforgettable performances, thriving community connections, and remarkable growth.

It has been an incredible privilege to serve as Artistic Director for the past nine years, and as I prepare to pass the baton, I am filled with gratitude. Together, we’ve built something extraordinary—bringing world-class music to Toronto, championing emerging talent through the Academy, and fostering a community that shares a passion for classical music, in all its forms.

The TSM Academy – Community Program turns ten th

The TSM Academy – Community Program turns ten this summer! Since 2015, we have been providing learning and performance opportunities for advanced adult amateur musicians from around the province and across the country. We are proud to provide an experience that deepens the participants' relationship with music in their daily lives. Community Program participants can choose from three streams: Chamber Music, Chamber Choir, and the Piano Masterclass. For one week each summer, you can rehearse and perform with professional musicians, and attend workshops, masterclasses, and Festival concerts.

If you are an avid amateur musician looking to connect with other musicians who share your passion, the Community Program is the perfect place for you. Join us this summer to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Community Program! Apply now on our website.

INTRODUCING our final Chamber Music Institute Mentor: violinist & violist Barry Shiffman!🎻

"Internationally acclaimed violinist and violist Barry Shiffman is well-respected as a musician, educator and administrator. He was co-founder of the St. Lawrence String Quartet (SLSQ), and since 2010, has been both the Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School and Director of the Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music. During his 17 years with the SLSQ, he appeared in over 2,000 concerts in venues around the globe and recorded several critically acclaimed discs under an exclusive contract with EMI Classics. A sought-after juror, he has served on the violin jury of the Tchaikovsky and Montreal Violin Competitions, and the String Quartet Competitions of London Wigmore Hall, Lyon and Geneva, as well as many national competitions in Canada. He holds the position of Artistic Director of Rockport Music in Massachusetts, overseeing all classical programming for the organization including a five-week summer chamber music festival."
