Dabin Zoey Yang was born in Seoul, South Korea, and began her musical journey at the age of 6. She and her family moved to Toronto, Ontario in 2016 where she attended the Taylor Academy for Young Artists, studying under Jonathan Crow and Barry Shiffman. She recently studied at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, under the tutelage of Professor Andrew Wan, concertmaster of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and she received her Bachelor’s diploma in June 2022. She is continuing her studies at McGill Schulich School of Music for a Master’s degree. Dabin is a designated Schulich Scholar and was also awarded the prestigious Lloyd Carr-Harris Scholarship at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. 

Dabin has competed in many competitions and festivals, winning numerous awards. In 2014, she was a semifinalist at the 8thYoung Tchaikovsky International Competition and won the Best Interpretation of Tchaikovsky award and the Best Interpretation of Isang Yun award. She was also a semifinalist in the 2021-2022 Golden Violin Competition at McGill University Schulich School of Music. Dabin is the winner of the 17th edition of the Prix Peter-Mendell Awards and was awarded the scholarship. 

As a chamber musician, Dabin formed the Theia Quartet with her colleagues at the Schulich School of Music. The quartet primarily studies with Professor André J. Roy. Theia Quartet was awarded the second prize at the 2019-2020 McGill Chamber Music Competition. Their prize included a residency at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. The quartet is an official Junior Quartet selection for the McGill International String Quartet Academy’s 2021 edition. In 2021, she won the first prize as a member of the 8 PM trio, winning a recital opportunity at Chapelle Historique du Bon Pasteur. 

Dabin has had the opportunity to participate in masterclasses and festivals with distinguished artists, including Ida Kavafian, Noah Bendix-Balgley, and Midori Goto. She has also participated in summer music festivals, such as Morningside Music Bridge and Orford Music Academy. 

Aside from playing the violin, Dabin enjoys teaching and spending time with her family.
